Long, severe rains struck italy in the autumn of 15 89. This was unusual for that time of year in a mediterranean climate. The crop yield in 15 89 was greatly diminished and then was almost ruined by cold, wet weather through the year 15 90. So this rolling series of crop failures led to a famine in many parts of italy that lasted for several years in the early 15 nineties.
