Aurelian's surprised decision to play type led to a far easier campaign for his legions. It laid the groundwork for an amicable return of the eastern provinces into the roman fold. As the imperial army continued southeast, cities that would have resisted out of a desperate belief that they were doomed one way or the other, now threw open their gates. Each city was given the same light treatment, compounding a wave of capitulation that led arelian all the way to the doorstep of antioch.
