Kiev has become to a much greater degree than I can ever remember an English-speaking city. If you don't speak Ukrainian and you do speak Russian, for example, then you can always start in English. The difficult thing is then people will try and speak English even if they don't actually speak it apart from a few words. It's different enough that you can speak Ukrainian with a Russian accent.
