There is a direct line to be drawn from the repeating telegraph to the invention of the edison phonograph. An 18 77 innovation allowed coded messages from a telegraph to be in coted by a stylus on a waxed paper disk. To replay the message, you flipped the paper disk over, which turned these inindentions into bumps. And a reader stylis travelled over these bumps. But thomas edison is said to have been listening to such machine work at high speed and realized that there as a connection between the vibration of the stylus and a sound pattern. So he tinkered with thi up, and then famously, was able to reproduce his own voice
