The Tension Between Intelligibility and Identity in English

Every place in the world where English has come to be adopted, it is almost immediately adapted to reflect the locale. The two criteria that we use are first of all intelligibility. Do we understand you? And secondly, the question of identity. Why are you speaking like that? Because we are who we are. We want to not lose our identity in a global anonymity.
