Derrida's Metaphysics of Presence
Derrida sees in Sussure's proposal that this is there's some kind of a purer time, supposedly when speech was not corrupted by the written word. Derrida tries to get rid of that division between writing and speech. He says, no, written words are signifiers, just as much as speeches. When you write the word tree, it is just as much a signifier of tree as as speech would be. And then we're gonna get to the question of whether that actually means the tree actually exists.
