In Rold Dahl's first edition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Umpaloopas were depicted as a real world sub-Saharan people. This provoked outrage when his chocolate novel came out in 1964, the Civil Rights Era. People generally don't blame the movies for this, they often praise the movies.
