In Rold Dahl's first edition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Umpaloopas were depicted as a real world sub-Saharan people. This provoked outrage when his chocolate novel came out in 1964, the Civil Rights Era. People generally don't blame the movies for this, they often praise the movies. For some reason that line of thinking rarely applied to other art forms like songs.
