In your book, you look at the constitutional prehistory of legislative institutions in India. You argue that despite whatever shortcomings there may have been in representative institutions in colonial India, they still nevertheless help to create a constitutional ethos. The exciting arena of nationalist politics has largely overshadowed the limited constitutional reforms put in place by the British from mid-19th century until late 19th century. But it is fairly obvious that these assemblies provided a training ground for independent India's elected representatives.
