The Reluctance to Give Up the Dream
The white dress and the reception emerged in the fifties post-war, right? Like when we had a middle class. And so the niceness of the wedding was like a performative way for your neighbors to see what they were able to do for their daughter. It's one of the few middle class dreams that I think people don't want to get people who have given up on college.
