Behind The Knife: The Surgery Podcast

CHAPTER

The Effects of Gut Microbiota on Astomotic Leak

Researchers wanted to find out if the composition of God Microbiota and patients before surgery may lead to or prevent an astomotic leak. They collected fecal samples from patients undergoing colorectal cancer resections. These samples were then analyzed and categorized according to who had an astomatic leak and who did it. We then transplanted the Microbiota of these patients in mice using a technique called fecal microbiota transplantation. Surprisingly, when we operated on these mice, we found that those receiving the MicrobiOTA of patients with anastomotic leak had a higher rate of anasto-leak.
