Why Do We Have a Neocortex?

There's debate amongst evolutionary neuroscientists as to whether the neocortex is actually new. One way of looking at evolution, brain evolution, suggests that the neurons that create the so-called neocortex are present in all vertebrates and are even present in animals that don't have a cortex like birds. The size of the brain tends to be very related to the longevity of an animal's life.
