The idea of the general will seems like it is just a problem of epistemology. We all know there must be a right thing to do, and what we need to do is to discover it. So in economic terms, then, the votes we have have an economic value of a kind - or they wouldn't be purchasable in this way. It turns out there's an ontological problem. The Ontological problem is the existence of the generalWill in the first place.
