The nine years war and the consequent plantation of ulster were watershed moments in irish history. Ulster went from being the province most strident in its resistance to the english to the area that the british ended up keeping when the rest of the isla established itself as a republic. And this historical division is one of the main causes behind the tensions that exist on the island of ireland even to day.
