How to Build a Portfolio for a Newbie

The first thing I would do is look at all the individual sectors and then try to find businesses inside those sectors that fall under my circle of competence. And then I would focus on those and try to try to pick and choose those and start to work up from there. It could also be a situation where, you know, I don't really want to spend the time learning what a utility does may not move my boat much. But if you're just starting out and that doesn't fall into your category, like commodities, for me, would be something I might know.
