The Four Women Song

In 19 65, alongside sammy davis, junior mahalia jackson, harry bella fonti and joan vyez simon, sang at the stars for freedom rally. She wrote a poem called four women, which was later made into a song as a tribute to the birmingham girls who had been killed. Her four women in the song were purposely stereotypes, she noted in order to underline how white america made black women invisible. Until they had the confidence, she said, to define themselves, they'd be stuck in the same mess forever.
