Greene worked for MI6 as section 5 analyzing human intelligence. He befriended John Cairn Cross, who would eventually be unmasked as the last member of the Cangrid V. Greene seemed to be drawn to these complex characters often classed as traitors. It was easy to see the link between real-life traitors and the characters that populated Greenland.
