The Mosaic web toolkit was created in the early 1990s at NCSA. The project began when Mark Wozniacki and Dave Thompson were working on a new version of Usenet. At that time, networking tools such as Gopher weren't flexible enough to let users create their own sites. But now it's possible for anyone to set up an online store or blog from any computer they want.
