The Story of Susie King

Susie King was a nurse for the U.S. army during the Civil War. She later moved to Massachusetts and became active in women's relief groups. In 1898, she went back to Louisiana to see her son who had been diagnosed with lung cancer. When she got there, she found out that he could not be taken home because of his race. Her experience shows how far racism has gone since 1861.
