How to Stick to What Works for Roguelikes

I see so many parallels between how this feels with spelunky but also with many roguelikes including turn based ones. As soon as I get like a little taste of success I'm gonna just repeat that formula forever and it's really quite difficult to get better at once. There is an absolute vanilla way to play net hack which involves getting a long sword dipping it in water  and you know blah blah Blonde says she has no intention of ever playing brogue the same way again.
