The literature and the text that he was reading were mainly Latin and French. There was also English poetry, we've gone unbroken tradition of English poetry in the UK. But what there wasn't was the kind of quarterly poetry like Chaucer's first long poem,. The Book of the Dutch Shess is very much in the French style of a poem which in French was known as a Ditamaro's, a love song. And Chaucer and his audience would not, before Chaucer, have had poems like that in English. Right. To us not that he's by any means a first to write in English, it's not that other people aren't writing in English at this
