The Republican Party is put under a consent decree in the early 1980s because the RNC had been funding these roving, marauding bands of the jalanties to try to stop free and fair voting. And so there is this strain of a kind of openly anti-democratic politics. But there is also an increasingly contradictory or not compatible, incompatible vision of democracy that conservatives have versus liberals. The attitude towards democracy only what democracy means has changed very much in this country.
