Margarita MacLeod claimed to be from Java, where she had been taken as a wife by a Dutch army officer with a Scottish last name. The sexuality of the performance was given an air of respectability because it was understood as a cultural encounter with religious significance. She actually didn't know much about Javanese dance. Her dance was a pastiche of stereotypes about the Hindu religion.
