Our educational practices are now so bizarre that they would defy the pen of a Jonathan Swift to satirize them. D'Alrymple talks about the importance of discipline and authority, both for schooling in general, as well as for parenting in particular. When rules are only sporadically enforced, even spelling rules, for example, the child begins to feel that rules are arbitrary; authority is something to be mistrusted. This lack of discipline and disrespect for authority can have wide-reaching consequences for society as a whole.
