The Origins of Life
How do you distinguish between something like sentience and a consciously experienced emotion? How do you think about that in terms of the kinds of dynamics you discuss in the book? That's a good question. They set us on this problem of trying to solve consciousness and self and cognition and so on with this cogito ergo sum. A student once suggested that we should change this, and I think the student was right. This you're an organism that is constantly at risk. Breaking down, things going wrong, has to feel because existence is threatened.
