No one has gotten this far in the cave except the two brits. They may not have food, but at least they can give them something until the seals arrive and can make a plan on how to extract them. And then it's time to go. As john stands up, he feels the cold, thin arms of one of the boys hugging him around his waist. The odds are stacked against them.
