The Importance of Open Source in Cloud Computing

Ditto is available as open source on GitHub. What do you see as some of the biggest misconceptions surrounding cloud computing? I think a major misconception is that academia, perhaps, is not well positioned to do research on cloud computing because we don't have access to cloud applications. It's very difficult to do experiments at a scale that is representative of what a real data center looks like.
