Tens of thousands of german and austrian jews were arrested and sent to concentration camps. Homes were ransacked and looted. Over seven thousand jewish shops and businesses were vandalized,. virtually every synagogue in germany was damaged or destroyed. Jewish cemeteries were vandalized. Gravestones were kicked over and broken; graves were dug up so that the bodies could be desecrated.
