The famous phrase, forty acres in a mule was the kind of claim right of reconstruction for all slaves. So it was actually the republican idea that gave teeth to the view that emancipating, abolishing slavery was insufficient to emancipate slaves. And this is what was so radical and dangerous about the civil war.
