The Origins of Slavery in Virginia
The origins of slavery are somewhat perky and we don't have a whole lot of explanation provided by 17th century Virginians about their rationale but it certainly seems plausible. Large landowners in the east were buckling under the changing dynamics of the market for tobacco. As supply began to have stripped demand and as prices began to fall I think that the elite Virginians realized that this system of temporary and danger of servitude was working to their disadvantage because they were bringing over future economic competitors.
