Complexity science is a discipline that studies complex systems. In this case, the collective properties are not really embedded in the individual bits. So you create a bunch of birds in a computer program and you have them adapt and react to each other in really simple ways. And you see whether that reproduces the flocking behavior on multiple scales or what.
