During the Cold War there was a risk of a real catastrophe. There were about 50,000 bombs on both sides and if they had gone off then that would have devastated much of the northern hemisphere. For those of us in Europe I think the realistic estimate of the risk during the Cold War was probably one in three or something like that. And it's hard to quantify obviously but looking back there was a substantial chance.
