The Importance of Godswoods
There's some evidence that the trees' faces might actually change. Bran learns to like and take comfort in the face after his crippling fall, before that it frightens him. Southerners do keep godswoods, but they have a different non-spiritual purpose. The saying done in the sight of gods and men might be wisdom that originated from this notion. It wouldn't be the first time that a northern custom was adopted and modified.
