While scientists can clone a mammal directly, they need to go through an extra step for birds. Beth says that developing this gene editing technology could be useful for bird conservation. And she thinks it's particularly worth it to do this research on the dodo. "I love the idea that we could transform the dodo from this icon of human-cost extinction to an icon of hope"
