The Vulnerability of David
Traditionally depictions of David in art portray him after his victory, standing triumphant over the slain Goliath. Other Italian artists before Michelangelo like Viraccio, Delano and Donatello show David standing over Goliath's severed head. For the first time ever, he chose to give us David before the fight. The shepherd is at the same time vulnerable in his nakedness and imposing in his size, standing over 13 feet tall.
