The Story Behind the Slave Ship Painting

The slave ship painting was given as a gift to a critic, John Ruskin in 1844. Ruskin quickly became a fan and he sort of championed Turner. He wrote in praise of the slave ship painting, but also said it was too painful to live with and sent it to auction in 1869.
