In 2009, Facebook introduced the like button and Twitter introduced the retweet button. So social media isn't just connecting people anymore; it becomes about performance. One of the key innovations, I believe, was what Facebook called threaded comments. It's not about me talking with you: It's about me talking at you in the hopes that my slam on you will get kicked up by others. And so this is what I've called metaphorically the fall of the Tower of Babel. We're now having a post-Babylon era where everyone's breaking bottles off each other because they don't know how to deal with one another. Universities are collapsing - we're going crazy right now.
