The History of the Federal Reserve

Before the Fed, it was gold, silver and greenbacks. The treasury is kind of a quasi central bank before the Fed is set up. They were very limited in their ability because of this requirement to keep the greenbacks convertible into gold. So there's only so much they could do without undermining the US dollar being on the gold standard.
