Douglass believed events gave evidence that a moral chemistry and an interventionist God drove history forward. Lincoln spoke with an eye on the Galilee while also listening to his evolving moral self as though he were the national evangelist. In Frederick Douglass's view during the final year and a half of the Civil War, one America died of violent, necessary death out of its ashes. A second refined America came into being amid destruction and explosions of hope.
