Mary mion's mother bakes a cake for her daughter's thirteenth birthday and leaves it on the window sill to but the newly arrived american soldiers are starving. They swipe the cake and eat every last crumb. Fast forward to 20 21, when mary is invited to the headquarters of the American army in italy to share her experiences of being a survivor of the war.
