The Secret Fear of an Anonymous Denunciation
The music is threatening with low brass and low winds snaking around again. The next lines come from Schostakovich's direct experience waiting at the door to be taken away by the police. We weren't afraid of construction work in blizzards or of going into battle into shellfire, but at times we were mortally afraid of talking to ourselves. Now Russia victorious over her own fears inspires greater fear in her enemies.
