Symbols in Ancient Greek and Roman Documents
Pilcrow is a symbol that looks kind of like a backwards p witha with a stalk made out of two vertical lines. It evolved due to the inconsistencies inherent in hand drawing. As it became more widely used, the sea gained a vertical line in keeping with the latest rubrication, trinds and other more elaborate embellishments. The character in question is the pill crow, which you can look up if you're not envisioning it already.
