The Neuroscience of Aesthetic Experience
In general, aesthetic experiences are strangely hard to pin down. When does your aesthetic experience of the anatomy lesson of Rembrandt start and stop? Only while you're looking at it? Or are we still having it while we talk about it? Are aesthetic experiences always positive? Are they sometimes negative? Can they be terrifying? I mean, there's just so much... To have aesthetic experiences is more like to come into a relationship with something. And relationships have good aspects and bad aspects. They can't really be pinned down. So neither art nor we are stable in the way that neuroscience wants us to be. Right.
