Eastern Airlines ran out of fuel six miles from the Portland airport. Two crew members and eight passengers died. This is actually pretty common with planes that run out of fuel and crash. You're more likely to have survivors because you don't have any fuel to catch on fire. In fact, that's why when planes have to make emergency landings, they tend to dump fuel.
