How Do You Know if You Have Severe Mitral Regurgitation?
The first line of investigation should be a chest x-ray, ECG and blood test. Echocardiography will give you the diagnosis of mitral regurgitation. It will also determine if any other heart valves are involved. Not all patients need a transosophageal echo - around 30 to 40%.
