The battle for the island of samar began in early September. Of 74 americans at the balangega garrison, forty eight are dead and all but two of the 26 survivors are wounded. Within days, us. Troops raise the town completely. The only evidence that anyone ever lived here are the crumbling walls of what was the church. A new leadership takes over on Samar with orders to make it a howling wilderness.
