55% of Americans support the death penalty and that number is held steady now for several years. 27 states still retain the death penalty, there are 41 federal statutes that carry the potential for the death penalty. More people believe that the death penalty is not imposed often enough than believe that it is imposed too often. The ultimate penalty should be reserved for the worst of the worst.
