Introduction
I hope in those years to build a society of opportunity. By that I mean an open society where what people fulfill will depend upon their talent, their application and their good fortune. In particular I want to see us build a country that is at ease with itself - confident and prepared to make the changes necessary for all our citizens. It's November 1990 when Margaret Thatcher is forced out of office by her parliamentary party. The resulting leadership election is won by former banker who left school at 16, John Major.
