A few years before all of this stuff blew up in Salem, there was a huge scandal in the court of Louis XIV. The Paris Police Commissioner went looking for what he expects to be like a group of criminals selling poisons or something like that. He's not looking for witches, he's got nothing about that in mind. Over 319 people ended up arrested, over 100 ended up sentenced, 36 or so were executed and another 34 were thrown out of the country.
