Many people think of machine learning as this magic wand that you can kind of wave at a data set. And the reality is when you dig into the field, you realize that you just introduce a whole other layer of parameters to fit the problem. So it actually is far easier to overfit with machine learning processes and learn more robust ways to derive signals out of sample.
