In our industry, most bike companies are not necessarily pre booking a season or ordering bikes way in advance. A lot of bike shops are mom and pop businesses that don't really have like very advanced forecasting models or long term purchasing plans. So it was important for us in order to solicit orders to have inventory available because we had to have the product ready for one that was in need. It's more likely that with larger retailers that you'd be able to maybe solicit an order a year out. If you're starting out and never sold a bike, it's probably unlikely that a larger retailer is going to place an order with you.
